Transformational Stories
Several years ago, we noticed something wonderful happening: the “little kids” who used to run through the doors for after-school programs were growing up. They were becoming teenagers with big dreams and bigger potential. MentorKids asked an important question: How can we keep walking alongside them as they step into adulthood?
And so, the iLEAD program was born.
Fast forward to this year, and history was made. The very first class of iLEADers from the Palomino Promise Neighborhood just graduated high school.
The First iLEAD Graduates from Palomino Promise Neighborhood: A Promise Fulfilled
A closer look at impact in action
These students are more than names on a list—they are living proof that faith, guidance, and community support changes lives:
Luis G. learned the power of choosing good friends and always telling the truth. He’s heading into a dental program to become a dental assistant.
Jesus discovered what it felt like to have adults care for him like family, giving him a “second home.” He’s pursuing welding at a trade school.
David has memories of Christmas parties and dreams of becoming an EMT.
Luis M. started as a second grader - he was a kid who loved running around with his friends and playing football. One of his favorite memories? The day he made an incredible catch during a football game—and someone snapped a perfect photo of the moment. He’s now starting a career in construction.
Zithlali went from always running late to becoming a MentorKids teacher and a leader who values responsibility. She wants to become a teacher for kids with special needs.
Aldo credits MentorKids for helping him learn to read the Bible—and is off to ASU for mechanical engineering.
Angel found a family in MentorKids and lifelong friendships.
Cece has learned patience—and she’s ready for whatever comes next.
These graduates aren’t just moving on; they’re moving up. Some are headed for college. Others for trade school, the workforce, or community service. And along the way, and all of them have already become mentors themselves—guiding the next generation of kids who are just starting out in MentorKids.
The iLEAD journey was far more than a job or an after-school activity. It became a powerful training ground where these young people transformed into confident, capable leaders, prepared to make their mark on the future. And for MentorKids, this first class of graduates is proof that the Promise Neighborhood Model works.
Each of these students carries the love, support, and lessons of their community wherever they go. And behind them, more iLEADers are rising up, ready to follow in their footsteps—and blaze trails of their own.
This is only the beginning.
