Transformational Stories
A closer look at impact in action
From Shy Student to Confident Leader
When Briana first walked into MentorKids as a second grader, she was a quiet, shy little girl who preferred to sit in the corner with her schoolwork rather than socialize. But over the years, MentorKids became her safe haven—a place where she was valued, encouraged, and supported in both her education and personal growth.
“One of my favorite memories was worship sessions with Mr. Chris,” Briana recalls. “I still remember us gathering as he played his guitar and taught us new songs each week.”
Briana – South Phoenix Promise Neighborhood
Mentors poured into Briana’s life consistently—reading with her, encouraging her, and showing up week after week. Their steady presence planted seeds of confidence that would later flourish.
Stepping Into Leadership
In high school, Briana joined the iLEAD program. At first, she stayed in the background, afraid to speak in front of others. With gentle encouragement from her mentor, Ms. Laura, and the support of her peers, Briana began to practice public speaking and leadership. Slowly, she transformed into someone who could not only manage a classroom but also inspire younger students.
Her hard work led to a major milestone: being offered a lead teacher position at a MentorKids Summer Enrichment Camp. There, she discovered her love for mentoring children and sharpened life skills like time management, communication, and responsibility.
Living Out Her Calling
Today, Briana is a student at Grand Canyon University, pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse. She has already earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification and currently works as a caregiver for Arizona Autism.
Her impact is deeply personal. A mother recently shared that while her daughter—non-verbal and non-mobile—often cried with other providers, she lights up and smiles when Briana walks through the door. It’s a clear reflection of Briana’s compassion, patience, and heart for service.
Briana dreams of becoming a traveling NICU nurse and one day owning her own home. She is already preparing for independence, building her credit and planning her future.
“Throughout my time with MentorKids, I met many mentors, and I am grateful for their influence in my life, which has helped me become a better leader for myself and others,” Briana shares.
Why Her Story Matters
From a timid child in the after-school program to a young woman changing lives, Briana’s journey shows what long-term mentorship makes possible. When children are consistently invested in, they don’t just grow up—they grow into leaders who change the lives of others.
